Examine transdisciplinary perspectives on how social understandings of sexualities and genders have informed cultural practices, social relations, the body and health, family life, law and policy, and other institutions of the state.
The graduate certificate program in sexuality studies addresses the social construction, political economy and cultures of sexualities and genders. This program interrogates heterosexuality and institutionalized heteronormativity and cisgenderism, and addresses lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and two-spirit identities and expressions as well as nonnormative sexual and gender identities that are not captured by LGBTQ+ categories.
This program allows students the flexibility to work with courses in sexuality and gender studies defined broadly, which are offered across disciplines and units at ASU. Students gain theoretical and analytic tools to examine gendered and racialized sexual structural inequities and how social issues, economic inequalities and state institutions impact and are impacted by sexuality as a social norm. In addition, coursework enables students to further investigate sexualities in relation to sexual stratification, reproductive rights and justice, sexual health and justice, carceral genders and sexualities, sex work, the state and legal system, and transnational and diasporic formations of sexualities and genders. The program integrates disciplinary, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives.

For elective coursework, students should see the academic unit for the approved course list. Other coursework may be used with the approval of the academic unit.
Applicants must fulfill the requirements of both the Graduate College and The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Applicants are eligible to apply to the program if they have earned a bachelor's or master's degree in any field from a regionally accredited institution.
Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in the last 60 hours of their first bachelor's degree program, or applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in an applicable master's degree program.
All applicants must submit:
- graduate admission application and application fee
- official transcripts
- a statement of purpose for pursuing the certificate
- proof of English proficiency
Additional Application Information
An applicant whose native language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency regardless of their current residency.
International students who need an F1 or J1 visa first need to apply to and be accepted into a graduate degree program prior to being considered for the certificate program. International students residing in the U.S. on other types of visas must adhere to all Graduate College policies and procedures regarding admission to be considered for admission to this certificate program.
The certificate is open only to current ASU degree-seeking students. However, with academic unit and Graduate College approval, up to nine credit hours of ASU nondegree credit may be transferred to the certificate program for those who eventually gain admission to an ASU graduate degree program. This is administered by the graduate certificate committee. Students should refer to the Graduate College policy on certificate programs.

Program learning outcomes identify what a student will learn or be able to do upon completion of their program. This program has the following program outcomes:
- Students in the sexuality studies certificate will be able to analyze how sexuality has been conceptualized and understood as an interdisciplinary category of analysis across the humanities, social sciences and behavioral sciences.
- Students completing the certificate will be able to articulate key theories that have contributed to the development of sexuality studies and their significance.
Graduates of the program have gone on to careers at universities, research and policy institutes, government organizations and nonprofit organizations.

3 year programs
These programs allow students to fast-track their studies after admission and earn a bachelor's degree in three years or fewer while participating in the same high-quality educational experience of a 4-year option. Students should talk to their academic advisor to get started.
Accelerated master's
These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).
Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Acceptance to the graduate program requires a separate application. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master’s during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program.
