    About the Position

    The Machine Shop Team functions to provide Central Arizona Project with internal expertise to maintain our large and geographically dispersed industrial mechanical systems. CAP is seeking a highly skilled, highly motivated Machinist / Mechanic to provide journeyman-level technical expertise in the performance and support of this vital function.

    + This position requires extensive machining skills with turning, milling, and grinding machines, large and small, manual, portable, and CNC.

    As a Machinist / Mechanic, you would be responsible for support of the overhaul and repair of heavy industrial mechanical equipment associated with large pumping plants, generation stations, check structures, turnouts, and aqueducts. Equipment includes synchronous motors, large pumps, hydroelectric turbines, radial gates and hoists, slide gates and hydraulic operator systems. You would manufacture, modify, shape and/or repair equipment and components using a variety of metal working machines and welding methods. You would be machining both small and large industrial components. Also, you would be knowledgeable of ASME codes and requirements. This position requires the set up and operation of machine tools to repair and/or refurbish components, working from manuals, diagrams, drawings, blueprints, verbal instructions, and/or reverse engineering. Our team’s performance of these functions helps to ensure that equipment is safe, mechanically sound, and operating efficiently, in order to provide reliable water deliveries. Work assignments would be based primarily at the Headquarters Machine Shop in North Phoenix. At times this position requires in state travel to perform work at other locations across the Central Arizona Project system.

    About the Qualifications

    If you possess a strong working knowledge of, and are highly proficient in the safe use of machine tools and equipment for precision measuring and inspection, fabricating, welding, calibrating, machinery alignment and leveling, reconditioning, maintaining, and repairing in an industrial mechanical environment; and are well versed about industrial safety requirements including lock out/tag out procedures; then we highly encourage you to apply for this position.

    Position SummaryWith direct guidance in a team environment, responsible for operating one or more production machines working from blueprints, sketches and route sheets.

    Responsibilities

    + Make simple setups and perform repetitive machine operations (including reworking parts) such as cutting, shaping, deburring, forming, drilling, reaming and smoothing parts. Make minor adjustments and report improper machine functioning or cutting action for correction.

    + Align and fasten parts using standard fixtures where established methods are followed.

    + Set feeds, speeds and depth of cut to machine quality parts.

    + Perform operations such as reaming, tapping, spot-facing, chamfering, countersinking, and counterboring.

    + Visually inspect parts for burrs and damaged machine surfaces.

    + Remove burrs, sharp edges, tool marks cracks or other irregularities from machined parts.
