The City of Chandler Fire Department is currently accepting applications for Firefighter. The closing date for this position is June 15, 2023, or once we have received 1500 applications, whichever comes first. Applicants that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to move forward to take the written examination through the National Testing Network (NTN).

The City of Chandler Fire Department is a progressive, internationally accredited organization with an ISO Class 1 rating and a distinguished history of service to the community. City charter authorizes the Department to mitigate all hazards, including fire suppression, emergency medical services (EMS), hazardous materials response, technical rescue, and crisis intervention. In support of those functions, the Fire Department staffs a fire prevention division, EMS and training divisions, mechanical maintenance facility, community preparedness office, and Department administration.

Who we are looking for:
Our new team members will have a passion for customer service, a positive attitude, be team players with a strong mentality and excellent communication skills. The primary function of an employee in this class is to protect the life and property within the community and surrounding communities, as requested. This includes responding to and mitigating emergency and non-emergency incident situations. These incidents include disaster situations, house and building fires, emergency rescue, hazardous material response, emergency medical services, welfare and well-being of the community and promote an environment of public safety within the City of Chandler Fire Department's response area.

Minimum Qualifications:


High school diploma or GED equivalency at time of application; andMust be at least 18 years of age at the time of application; andA valid State of Arizona Emergency Medical Care Technician Certification (EMCT) will be required by hire date (please attach a copy of your valid certification or a copy of a provisional certification or proof of current enrollment in EMT school with a completion date of no later than December 31, 2023 to the electronic application); orA valid National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) may substitute for the State of Arizona Emergency Medical Care Technician Certification (EMCT)* at the time of application (please attach a copy of your certification to the electronic application); andA current Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) (within twelve (12) months prior to hire date, proof will be required at time of conditional offer); andAbility to obtain and maintain the Firefighter I & II Certifications prior to graduation from the Fire Academy; andMust meet the qualifications to wear a tight-fitting respirator by passing a medical evaluation test in accordance with CFR 1910.134 by hire date and must maintain certification; andMust meet and maintain the National Fire Protection Association standard 1582 Chapter 5.1 Essential Job Tasks.A valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record (proof will be required at time of conditional offer).Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Chandler's Firefighter Hiring Process:

All applicants must attain favorable results in each of the examination phases to qualify for the next phase. Human Resources reserves the right to change the process without notification if deemed necessary.

The application and required documentation MUST be submitted by Thursday, June 15, 2023 at 11:59 PM for eligibility to participate in the written examination.

Applicants who meet the minimum requirements to test will be invited to the Written Exam. The Written Exam will be offered through the National Testing Network (NTN) during the testing window of July 3 through July 21. You have the option of completing the NTN test virtually, or you can complete the test at one of NTN’s locations across the U.S. Candidates who tested previously with NTN and have current valid FireTEAM test scores may submit their existing scores to Human Resources for Chandler’s Firefighter testing process without having to test again. NTN scores are valid one year from your test date. NTN registration will be invitation-only. Detailed information and instructions to register with NTN will only be sent to the qualified applicants by June 30, 2023.

Note: The Chandler Fire Department is not currently offering the CPAT exam. Candidates are encouraged to take the CPAT or prep-courses at other organizations like Maricopa Community Colleges or the National Testing Network.

The position available is a full-time position and is subject to a twelve (12) month probationary period. A register of qualified candidates will be active for up to two (2) years or at the discretion of the Fire Chief.

The City of Chandler will conduct a pre-employment drug/alcohol test, motor vehicle record check, medical evaluation, and a background check on the successful candidates. A final offer of employment is contingent upon acceptable results.

The City of Chandler fingerprints all applicants selected for hire to evaluate the fitness of prospective employees. The examination process may vary if determined necessary.

*Arizona does not have reciprocal agreements with any other states for Emergency Medical Care Technician (EMCT) Certifications; therefore, other state level certifications cannot be transferred to Arizona. Successful candidates will be required to have a current and valid Arizona EMCT or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) certification and reside in Arizona by hire date, January 2, 2024. (Arizona will not certify anyone initially at any level if they do not have a current and valid National Registry certification.)

Applicants for employment and volunteer opportunities should be aware of the City of Chandler’s policies concerning the use of drugs and alcohol. These policies have not been altered by the passage of Proposition 207. The use of recreational marijuana is a violation of the City’s Drug Free Workplace Policy. A positive result for drugs tested under the policy, including recreational marijuana, may be grounds for withdrawal of an offer of employment or volunteer opportunity.
