• This position is posted as Technical Instructional Designer, which is a working title. The NAU system title for this position is Instructional Designer, Intermediate.
• Regular statewide travel will be a required aspect of this position. Being able to travel to and from College of Nursing locations is essential to this position.

Job Description

The Technical Instructional Designer supports the technical implementation and management of Canvas courses within the College of Nursing. This role focuses on the technical aspects of course design, including facilitating LTI integrations, managing Canvas blueprint courses, and collaborating with Canvas IT staff. The position serves as a technical liaison, translating academic business needs into technical requirements, ensuring seamless integration of third-party educational technologies, and supporting course quality assurance (QA) processes for the College of Nursing.

Canvas Technical Design - 40%

• Manage technical configurations within Canvas, including LTI integrations and blueprint course management.
• Collaborate with faculty to ensure technical alignment with academic goals.

Technical Support and Troubleshooting - 25%

• Act as the College's representative to NAU Canvas IT for technical issue resolution.
• Provide Tier 2 technical support and escalate issues as necessary.

Vendor Collaboration and Software Integration - 20%

• Interface with EdTech vendors to support Canvas integrations.
• Assist with evaluating and rolling out new Canvas-integrated software tools.

Course Quality Assurance - 10%

• Conduct QA reviews of Canvas courses to ensure technical functionality, accessibility, and consistency.
• Serve as secondary support to the Lead Instructional Designer.

Other - 5%

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in educational technology, information systems, curriculum design, or a related field.
• 2+ years of experience managing LMS technical functions, must be in Canvas, including LTI integration and blueprint course management.
• A combination of related education, experience and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Proven ability to translate academic needs into technical specifications.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to translate business needs or technical requirements to various stakeholders.
• Experience with Cidi Labs software or similar design support applications.
• Familiarity with Canvas API, LTI and third-party EdTech tools integration.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in an academic environment.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge:

• In-depth understanding of Canvas LMS technical features and integrations.
• Knowledge of instructional technologies and EdTech tools commonly used in higher education.

Skills:

• Strong technical troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
• Proficiency in managing LTI tools, APIs, and Canvas administrative settings.
• Excellent communication skills to convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders.

Abilities:

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Capacity to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and external vendors.

Background Information

Salary

$45/hour, part time temporary hourly rate.

FLSA Status

This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.
