Job Overview:
The Lead Operator is responsible for overseeing daily operations in our Spoke NA1 metals recycling plant located in Mesa, Arizona, ensuring the efficient processing of scrap metal materials. This role will involve leading a team of operators, ensuring safety, maintaining equipment, and optimizing productivity while adhering to environmental and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Operational Leadership:
• Supervise and lead a team of operators in the metal recycling facility.
• Coordinate daily work schedules, monitor team performance, and provide guidance.
• Ensure operators are trained on equipment use, safety protocols, and proper recycling methods.
2. Plant Operations:
• Operate and monitor machinery used in the metal recycling process (e.g., shredders, crushers, separators).
• Balance throughput on multiple production lines to meet operating goals.
• Ensure machines are running efficiently, making necessary adjustments and troubleshooting as needed.
• Oversee the sorting, processing, and packaging of recyclable metal materials.
• Perform quality control checks to ensure materials meet industry standards
3. Safety Compliance:
• Enforce safety standards and ensure all team members follow OSHA regulations and plant safety protocols.
• Conduct daily safety briefings and regularly review safety procedures.
• Lead and assist with safety audits, inspections, and accident investigations.
4. Maintenance & Troubleshooting:
• Monitor the condition of equipment, schedule routine maintenance, and assist with repairs as necessary.
• Identify mechanical issues and coordinate with maintenance personnel for timely repairs.
• Ensure the proper functioning of the plant’s environmental control systems, such as dust collection and air filtration units.
5. Inventory & Materials Management:
• Track inventory of scrap metal and processed materials.
• Ensure materials are properly sorted, stored, and prepared for shipment or further processing.
• Work with the logistics team to coordinate shipments and delivery of processed materials.
6. Reporting & Documentation:
• Maintain accurate records of production, machine performance, and safety incidents.
• Provide reports on operational efficiency, downtime, and production levels to the Plant Manager.
• Ensure proper documentation of maintenance activities and compliance with environmental regulations.
7. Continuous Improvement:
• Identify opportunities for improving operational efficiency and reducing costs.
• Implement new processes, equipment, or technologies to improve productivity and quality.
• Foster a culture of continuous improvement and encourage team input for process enhancements.
Qualifications:
• Education:
o High School Diploma or GED required
o Technical certifications or vocational training in industrial equipment, mechanical systems, or a related field preferred
• Experience:
o 3–5 years of experience in metal recycling, manufacturing, or industrial operations
o 1–2 years in a supervisory or leadership role
• Travel:
o Ability to travel to Canada for job-related training as required
• Skills:
o Strong knowledge of recycling processes and machinery
o Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and blueprints
o Strong problem-solving skills and mechanical aptitude
o Excellent communication and team leadership abilities
o Ability to work in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment
• Certifications:
o Forklift certification or similar heavy equipment licenses may be required
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to lift and move heavy materials
• Ability to stand for extended periods
• Comfortable working in outdoor or noisy environments
Working Conditions:
• The Lead Operator will be expected to work in a plant environment with exposure to loud noise, dust, and varying temperatures.
• May be required to work extended hours, weekends, or holidays depending on operational needs.
• Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots is mandatory.
